Program Overview

The primary goal of the Cosmetology program is to train the student in basic manipulativeskills, safety judgments with sanitation and sterilization at all times; proper work habits and desirable approaches necessary for Cosmetology or a related career opportunity.

The cosmetology program consists of 1200 hours of instruction of both theoretical andpractical skill development required for licensure by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetologyand Hairstyling. Theory and practice precede clinic activities and students must complete thetheory and practical for each exercise in the first 600 hours curriculum and receive a passinggrade on each exercise before being allowed to participate in clinic activities.

The NJ State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling conduct all examinations in English andSpanish. All education and learning environments in our school are conducted in English andSpanish, to include classroom activities andclinic floor education.

Admissions Requirements

  • CBAB admits as regular students, those who possess high school diplomas or GED certificates.
  • All students must be at least 17 years of age and have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • All applicants must demonstrate an attitude and aptitude for success as a beauty professional in a personal interview.

For registration, an applicant must supply

  • A copy of her/his birth certificate or a valid New Jersey State driver's license
  • A copy of her/his high school diploma or GED, a completed application and $100.00 in fees.
  • All applicants must complete a New Jersey State Board Registration form which will be provided by the school.

To become a cosmetologist-hairstylist you must:

  1. Be at least 17 years of age.
  2. Provide proof of successful completion of high school or its equivalent.
  3. Provide proof of successful completion of 1,200 hours of instruction in cosmetology and hairstyling at an approved school in New Jersey, another state or a foreign country. Training completed in another state or a foreign country must, in the opinion of the Board, be substantially similar to that offered at licensed schools within New Jersey.
  4. Take and pass an examination administered by the Board.
